Welcome & Call to Worship

Psalm 100 (NIV)

Leader: Welcome to Evanston Bible Fellowship! If you’re new, we invite you to scan the QR code in front of you and fill out the connection card to let us know you’re here. Please stand for our call to worship from Psalm 100, reading the words in bold.

Leader: 1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the Lord is God.
All: It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Leader: 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
All: 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Leader: Let’s lift up our hearts and voices in worship!

God So Loved (Live At The Wheelhouse)

Come all you sinners
Come find His mercy

Jesus is waiting there
With open arms

Chorus 2
For God so loved the world that He gave us
His one and only Son to save us
Whoever believes in Him will live forever
The power of hell forever defeated
Now it is well I'm walking in freedom
For God so loved God so loved the world

From whom all blessings flow
Praise Him praise Him
For the wonders of His love

Chorus 3

His one and only Son to save

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

Verse 1
O Love that will not let me go
I rest my weary soul in thee
I give thee back the life I owe
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer fuller be

Verse 2
O Light that follows all my way
I yield my flick’ring torch to thee
My heart restores its borrowed ray
That in thy sunshine’s blaze
Its day may brighter fairer be

Verse 3
O Joy that seekest me through pain
I cannot close my heart to thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be

Chorus
O love that will not let me go
O love that will not let me go
O love that will not let me go

Verse 4
O Cross that liftest up my head
I dare not ask to fly from thee
I lay in dust life’s glory dead
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be

Ending
O love that will not let me go
O love that will not let me go

How Deep The Father's Love For Us

Verse 1
How deep the Father's love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Verse 2
Behold the Man upon a cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

Verse 3
I will not boast in anything
No gifts no pow’r no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

Confession & Assurance

Leader: Let us pray this prayer of confession together:

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Leader: Hear the good news: But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom 5:8)

All: For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Col 1:13)

Leader: (Prayer)

Scripture Reading: 1 John 3:11-18 (NIV)

Leader: Please return and remain standing (as you are able) for today’s Scripture reading from 1 John 3:11-18. After the reading, the response will be, “Thanks be to God.”

11 For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Leader: The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

Leader: You may be seated.

Message: Pastor Tim Allen

“Love Like Jesus” (1 John 3:11-18)

  1. Love one another (v. 11)!

  2. Love one another unlike Cain, the prototype of hate displayed in the world (vv. 12-13).

  3. Love one another like Jesus, the prototype of love displayed in the church (vv. 14-18).

Bottom Line: Love one another like Jesus!
