Call to Worship

Isaiah 66:1-2 (NIV)

Leader: Welcome to Evanston Bible Fellowship! Please stand and join us in this call to worship from Isaiah 66:1-2, reading the words in bold

Leader: 1 This is what the Lord says:
 Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.
Where is the house you will build for me?
Where will my resting place be?
2 Has not my hand made all these things,
and so they came into being?”
declares the Lord.
All: These are the ones I look on with favor:
those who are humble and contrite in spirit,
and who tremble at my word.

"Children of God"

Verse 1
Praise to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
Our God and our King to Him we will sing
In His great mercy He has given us life
Now we can be called the children of God

Pre-Chorus
Great is the love that the Father has given us
He has delivered us
He has delivered us

Chorus 1
Children of God sing your song and rejoice
For the love that He has given us all
Oh children of God
By the blood of His Son we have been redeemed
And we can be called children of God
Children of God

Verse 2
The mystery is revealed to the universe
The Father above has proven His love
Now we are free from the judgment that we deserve
So we are called the children of God

Bridge
We are the saints
We are the children
We've been redeemed
We've been forgiven
We are the sons and daughters of our God
 REPEAT

Chorus 2
Children of God sing your song and rejoice
For the love that He has given us all
Oh children of God
By the blood of His Son we have been redeemed
And we can be called children of God
Children of God
Children of God children of God

"Goodness of God"

Verse 1
I love You Lord
Oh Your mercy never fails me
All my days
I've been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
I will sing of the goodness of God

Chorus
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God

Verse 2
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
In darkest night
You are close like no other
I've known You as a father
I've known You as a friend
I have lived in the goodness of God

Bridge
Your goodness is running after
It’s running after me
Your goodness is running after
It’s running after me
With my life laid down
I’m surrendered now
I give You everything
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me

"Good Good Father"

Verse 1
I've heard a thousand stories
Of what they think You’re like
But I've heard the tender whisper
Of love in the dead of night
You tell me that You’re pleased
And that I'm never alone

Chorus
You're a Good Good Father
It's who You are
It's who You are
It's who You are
And I'm loved by You
It's who I am
It's who I am
It's who I am

Verse 2
I've seen many searching for answers
Far and wide
But I know we're all searching for answers
Only You provide
Because You know just what we need
Before we say a word

Bridge
You are perfect in all of Your ways
You are perfect in all of Your ways
You are perfect in all of Your ways to us

Verse 3
Love so undeniable I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable I can hardly think
As You call me deeper still
As You call me deeper still
As You call me deeper still
Into love love love

Confession & Assurance

Leader: Please join us in this prayer of confession from Psalm 130, reading the words in bold
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
2 Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.

All:
3 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
Lord, who could stand?
4 But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

Leader:
5 I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
6 I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.

All:
7 Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.

Leader: Hear these words of assurance from 1 John 1:7, 9

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

All:
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness

Leader: (Prayer.)

Leader: You may be seated.

Scripture Reading

Matthew 5:33-48 (NIV)

Leader: Please return and remain standing (as you are able) for today’s Scripture reading from Matthew 5:33-48. After the reading, the response will be, “Thanks be to God.

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Leader: The Word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God!

Leader: You may be seated.

1 Peter 2:21-24:

21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.

    "Holy Holy Holy"

    Verse 1
    Holy holy holy
    Lord God Almighty
    Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to Thee
    Holy holy holy
    Merciful and mighty
    God in three persons
    Blessed Trinity

    Verse 2
    Holy holy holy
    All the saints adore Thee
    Casting down their golden crowns
    Around the glassy sea
    Cherubim and seraphim
    Falling down before Thee
    Which wert and art
    And evermore shalt be

    Verse 3
    Holy holy holy
    Though the darkness hide Thee
Though the eye of sinful man
    Thy glory may not see
    Only Thou art holy
    There is none beside Thee
    Perfect in power
    In love and purity

    Verse 4
    Holy holy holy
    Lord God Almighty
All Thy works shall praise Thy name
In earth and sky and sea
    Holy holy holy
    Merciful and mighty
    God in three persons
    Blessed Trinity

"Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me "

    Verse 1
What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy my righteousness and freedom
My steadfast love my deep and boundless peace

To this I hold my hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to his
Oh how strange and divine I can sing all is mine
Yet not I but through Christ in me

    Verse 2
The night is dark but I am not forsaken
For by my side the Saviour he will stay
I labour on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need his power is displayed

To this I hold my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley he will lead
Oh the night has been won and I shall overcome
Yet not I but through Christ in me

    Verse 3
No fate I dread I know I am forgiven
The future sure the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And he was raised to overthrow the grave

To this I hold my sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh the chains are released I can sing I am free
Yet not I but through Christ in me

    Verse 4
With every breath I long to follow Jesus
For he has said that he will bring me home
And day by day I know he will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne

To this I hold my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to him
When the race is complete still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I but through Christ in me

    Ending
When the race is complete still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I but through Christ in me
Yet not I but through Christ in me
